The 30-second guide to checking credentials
In the UK, the titles "Counsellor" and "Psychotherapist" aren't legally protected, which means anyone can use them. To help you feel safe and confident, we recommend a quick "3-step check" before your first session.
1. Find their "letters"
On every profile in our network, you will see letters after the therapist's name (for example, MBACP, UKCP, HCPC). These indicate which professional body they belong to.
2. Check the official register
You don't have to take their word for it. You can search for their name directly on the public register of their professional body:
- BACP Register (most counsellors)
- UKCP Register (psychotherapists)
- HCPC Register (psychologists and arts therapists)
- NCPS Register (National Counselling & Psychotherapy Society)
3. Ask the "big three" questions
If you're still feeling unsure, it is perfectly okay (and very common!) to ask a therapist these three questions in your first email:
- "Which professional body are you registered with?"
- "Do you have professional indemnity insurance?"
- "Do you have regular supervision?" (This is a standard safety requirement for all ethical therapists.)
A note from the Centre
A professional therapist will never be offended by these questions. In fact, they will appreciate that you are taking your safety seriously.
